When it comes to getting fillings put in your teeth, there are more than just regular ones. They have glass fillings too. Should you get glass fillings? What are the benefits of glass fillings?

Glass fillings are the same color as your teeth and are bonded to the enamel and dentin of your teeth. Here is more information regarding glass fillings and whether or not you should get one or more put in.

Benefits of a Glass Filling

Glass fillings, or otherwise known as glass ionomers have several different benefits for you. For one thing, if you get a glass filling, it will release fluoride into your mouth over time to prevent decay in and around the filling.

A glass filling will also bond with the tissue of the teeth using chemicals. They can also be colored to match your existing teeth. Glass fillings can also be used with regular, composite fillings to create a strong tooth colored filling.

Disadvantages of Glass Tooth Fillings

Although they do have their benefits, which are all good reasons to get glass ionomers, there are also reasons why you should not get glass fillings in your teeth. For one thing, they may not be strong enough and may break if put under pressure.

Glass fillings also are not as easy to keep clean and polished as the regular, composite fillings. Not only this, but glass fillings can also wear down easier than composite fillings and may not last as long.

What Are Good Alternatives to Glass Fillings?

If you think the disadvantages outweigh the benefits of glass fillings, you should get composite as a good, and maybe even a better alternative. However, if you prefer something else, ask us about amalgam fillings, which may be the best alternative to both of these.
