Why Filling Cavities Prior to Whitening is Important

Posted on 9/20/2018 by Boeckel
Why Filling Cavities Prior to Whitening is ImportantYou've got a big event coming up, and you'd like your smile to look its best. Unfortunately, years of stains have accumulated, and you'd like to whiten them away.

You are in luck, because there are many great whitening treatments out there, but they shouldn't be considered if you are in need of dental work. This is especially true if you have a cavity that has yet to be treated.

Take Care of Cavities before You Whiten

There are many reasons that you'll want to treat your cavities before you whiten your teeth. First, a cavity means that you have a hole in your tooth caused by decay.

Should you whiten with that hole in place, you'll likely experience some pain as the whitening solution seeps into the inner parts of the tooth. This can also irritate and further weaken the rest of the tooth, making future treatment more difficult.

Waiting to whiten until after your cavities are treated not only protect the health of your tooth, but it will also increase the chances that your whitening treatment is successful. Most whitening treatments offered in a dental office will consist of custom-made trays that perfectly fit around the tooth. Filling in your cavities will ensure your dentist is able to create a tray that best fits your mouth.

Fillings after Whitening

You should also take note that the filling itself won't whiten with your treatment. Take this into consideration when you choose the type of filling that you want. Traditional metal fillings are certainly an option, but many people choose the more aesthetic white fillings. Your dentist can help you to choose the right one.

Whether you are in need of a filling or would like to discuss whitening your teeth, we are here to help. Call us today to learn more.
